JESS: Cantab Babes | Taking Cambridge

The aim of this series is all about highlighting the success and joy within black women around me also studying at Cambridge. To showcase the plethora of careers and ambitions that so many different women are pursuing, to act as a motivation to other who have similar aspirations and dreams.

With so much of the narrative in media surround Black struggle and difficulties, BijouCREATES aspires to also represent the perspective of effortless black success, people who still succeed and shine despite it all. The goal is to then integrate one of my newer pieces with your feature to show how these items are everyday luxuries with can support and be used in different aspect of everyday life, add a little pop to those moments. Fashion plays a part in empowering us making us feel confident and ready to take on the world.

TREAT ME LIKE I TREAT MYSELF

Jess is a medical student studying a Mphil in Medical Sciences (Psychiatry) I met whilst I was studying at Cambridge. During the time of this feature Jess was in her intercalation year from her full time Medical Studies. Alongside her academics, Jess also creates guides to help other medical students in the UK aspiring to travel abroad.

In my interview with Jess I wanted to focus on learning about how she balances her busy work life with her personal free time, and finds small luxuries.

Introducing Jess X BijouCREATES

Jess is known for her work hard play hard mindset, and I love how she is able to reward herself for all you achieves through travel and self-care and other treats. Currently a big focus within BijouCREATES is promoting women, especially young working & busy women, to also find ways to treat themselves to luxuries big or small. To find ways to reward themselves for their achievements and all the hard work they put in instead of waiting for someone else to.

FULL INTERVIEW

For Jess, I wanted the styling of her feature to be inline with her clean class, no fuss aesthetic. She loves a luxe evening out, so I thought why not showcase the designs for a formal evening look, and there is no better setting than a Cambridge formal! I wanted to show how these designs can be dressed up, with a simple neutral and modern look, to add an easy colour burst. Especially to those who want to try colour and prints but not be overwhelmed by them. The ruched black middi dress, compliments Her flawless allowing the bag to be a unique, small statement moment.
